The Art of Peeping
Allowed or not allowed? That is the question posed by New York photographer Arne Svenson's series The Neighbors. In the series he photographed his neighbors in their homes without permission. The project ignited a court case, which the artist recently won under his First Amendment rights.
Despite the victory, Svenson is being regarded by the public as a Peeping Tom, someone who has ignored his subject's privacy. The criticism goes beyond conversations of privacy, reaching as far as to label him a pervert.
Svenson says this about the work, "I find the unrehearsed, unconscious aspects of life the most beautiful to photograph, as they are most open to interpretation, to a narrative."
Svenson is represented by Julie Saul Gallery in NYC and Western Projects in L.A. To View more of the series click here.
