Richard Renaldi's Touching Strangers
Richard Renaldi's Touching Strangers series is being talked about all over the country, appearing on all kinds of blogs, and most recently, being discussed on NPR. Shooting with an 8X10 view camera, Renaldi approaches people to pose next to, and most importantly be in physical contact with, other strangers. Renaldi has said that the novelty of his antique camera makes approaching these strangers far easier.
The defusive nature of large format cameras like Renaldi's is not a new concept, but what he has done is to put that fact to the test in what might be the most successful way. The diversity of the world's cultures, religions and political parties, and the crime that propagates due to that diversity makes the simple act of reaching out to touch another highly difficult.
With no intention at all of demising Renaldi, Printlab would like to say Cheers! to what is truly a touchy feely body of work in all the right ways.
